Star Trek and NIF 
The Implosion Core at NIF where the 192 LASER beams converge to induce fusion in a dollop of cold Deuterium, Tritium or a combination thereof. These 192 LASERs were made possible by the work of Martin Sala and his team at Corning Incorporated in 1999. Carolyn Almennigen designed and executed the Optical Engineering experiments; prototyping and deployment was made successful by the Engineers and Technicians at the Canton, NY and Goose Creek, SC facilities.
The NIF Implosion Core "souped-up" to transform it into Star Trek's Warp-Core in Into Darkness. I can honestly say: I made this!
